In his thesis 'The Patenting
Paradox', dr.ir. Arnaud Gasnier claims that employees of companies and
research-centers can learn to become more efficient in dealing with patents
using a patenting game and the framework Patent Power. During the 'High Tech
Entrepreneurship Week' PhD. students and researchers will get the chance to try
their hand at this game and see how good they are in dealing with patents.
The
game is described in Gasniers’ book ‘The Patenting Paradox, a game-based
approach to patent management’. Companies and research-centers are investing in
patents more and more, but this does not always lead to more money because they
neglect to create good patenting strategies, pay insufficient attention to
patents once they have been accepted and sometimes do not know enough about
patent management. As a result most patents are left to linger on bookshelves.
Gasnier calls this phenomenon the Patenting Paradox.
Three years of research at the TU-Delft and TNO, where Gasnier
works as patenting expert, went into writing this book. Gasnier, who is also a
qualified European patent attorney, leans on ten years of international
experience in this field. The research is sponsored by the Research Fund of the
European Patent Organization.
The most
important ingredients of the game are: gps-, pc-, dvd-, mp3- and pda-
factories and patents, a dice, a board and a startup capital of 3 million. Will
you build a dvd-factory hoping that your opponent with the patent will want to
make a deal? Or will you invest in a pc-patent because you might get
the chance to open your own computer factory? These types of strategic
considerations, your bargaining skills, and also the dice will decide how much
money you will generate during the board game Patentopolis by Arnaud Gasnier.
